The establishment of an authentic city dates back to 1500 B.C., inhabited at the beginning of its Amazigh upbringing, then entered by the Phoenicians and Carthaginians, after which it was transformed into a Roman castle named Zelis, and in the Islamic era saw the migration of Andalusia during the Umayyad period from the inhabitants of the city of St. In 1307, it was an important port connecting it with European coastal cities, and during the Phoenician era it was one of the most important commercial centers, then occupied by the Portuguese in 1471, and then abandoned in 1549 because of an economic crisis, thus It was recaptured by Moroccans during the reign of Moulay Ismail in 1692, and Spain occupied Morocco from 1912 to 1956, but was originally recovered from the Spanish in 1978.

Located 31 km south of Tangier, In an area known as Suhaila on the Atlantic coast, Asila al-Maroc is surrounded by the Sweet Valley River and its estuary on the city's coast, with an area of 33 square kilometres.
The city has a 17.2 km coastal beach, with sandy beaches such as Al-Aweina, Paradis and Sidi Maghaith, and there are rocks along the coast suitable for seabirds, including seagulls.

• There is a large circular theatre and a distinctive library built by Prince Bandar bin Sultan and this area is known as the Sultan's Valley.
